A VOX POP ON THE CHANGE OF NAME OF UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS TO MOSHOOD ABIOLA UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS; BY OVADOBA JAMES
The president of the federal republic of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, on behalf of his team, recently announced the change of name of University of Lagos to Moshood Abiola University. What do you think of the President’s decision?

Changing the name of an institution is actually not the priority of the nation for now. The change of name appears like a relegation of the school and all it represent. The way it was done was also very wrong because the senate of the school claimed they were not informed about the plan. The change of name was, however, not altogether out of place as it was meant to honor a great man; though the timing was very wrong as the school was just recovering from the death of her vice chancellor.

I think it is not right. They should have named something else after him; say a street, stadium etc. and not a university, a federal one for that matter. It caught the student unaware. It also appears autocratic and a violation of the rights of the student because they claimed not to have been informed and as such were unaware of the plan.

The change should probably have been in his state or the FCT on the one hand. On the other hand, the student should not have gone that far because nothing has really changed but the name.

They have changed the name and it remains changed. I see no issue in it because it is not the first time the name of an institution will be change in the country. Other institutions across the country from one time or the other have had their names changed. The only thing is that people from outside may find it difficult adjusting to the new name.

It was unnecessary. It is an evidence of the short sightedness of our government because that is not the nation’s problem for now. If we are to honor him, it is to make sure that his death was not in vain by striving for the ideals he strove for and not the changing of the name of an institution.

It is funny. Of all things to talk about in Nigeria changing the name of an institution is the least. It is funny they pick on changing the name of a school.
